Water births it sounds weird we aren't after all dolphins, but to my surprise more and more woman today are having there babies in water. Growing in popularity, celebrities such as Pamela Anderson and Kate Winslet have all reportedly had water births. So in today's world of choices is a water birth right for you?

The main reason woman have water births is because the water minimizes the pain that goes along with the laboring process. When sitting in a warm pool of water woman get so relaxed that there baby just comes out. Well I'm sure it is a little harder then that, but it reduces the pain quite a bit. Water also provides buoyancy so the pressure on the back and stomach are relieved, and it is very relaxing for the mother.

Some benefits for you and your baby are that your baby is used to water from being in the womb so babies introduction to life is much easier, as well as babies first breath coming out of the water. Another benefit for baby is that the atmosphere under water stimulates the womb and makes it more comfortable and relaxing for you and your baby.

You can also have a water birth at your home in a bath tub or you can rent a birthing pool, or for a cheaper option buy a kiddie pool, it sounds funny but it can be done. Now I don't know about you but when I think about a kiddie pool, I think about a plastic one that sits outside on my lawn with a picture of spider man on it. These aren't the kiddie pools I'm talking about. I don't know about you but I don't want the first image my baby sees to be a floating image of Spider man. So I would suggest renting a birthing pool they are bigger and can fit 2 people, so you and your partner, can both experience the joys of a water birth.

If you have a high risk pregnancy or are having any complications what so ever, a water birth may not be for you. Also you should ask your doctor or midwife about what the hospital has in terms of a birthing pool, some hospitals just don't have the facilities. Good Luck in whatever form of labor you choose.
