I had a baby boy that weighed only 5lbs 12oz which seemed really small compared to my neighbors baby that weighed close to 11 pounds. So what contributes to your baby’s birth weight and what things determine how much your baby will weigh when he or she is born? If you have more then one kid usually your first will be the smallest and then they can get bigger as they go so your third child will most likely be bigger then your first. Boys tend to be heavier then girls although this is not always true.

Genetics can play a large part in this. If dad and mom are small they will most likely have a small baby. If both parents are big or large then chances are that, that couple will have a larger baby. If mom is small and dad is bigger then your baby will often take after the mom and be on the smaller side. This is nature’s way of helping the small mom out during labor.

If you the mother weighed for example 6 lbs then chances are your first baby will follow in your footsteps. The later children might be bigger but it all depends on the individual mother. The mother’s weight before pregnancy can determine your baby’s weight. If the mother was heavier before her pregnancy then she will most likely have a heavier baby. If the mother to be weight was normal or if mom was skinny she will most likely have a smaller baby.

There are many more factors that can determine your baby’s weight; your doctor will let you know how big your baby will be and if your baby is going to be healthy. Babies can be healthy even at what is considered to be a smaller baby and babies can be healthy even if they are considered large. So don’t worry if your baby is small, chances are your baby is just fine, your baby is unique so don’t compare her or him to other babies.
