They say to start potty training when you child is ready but how do you know when they are ready and how do you get them excited to go to the potty by themselves?

What I did was buy my son the book A Potty For Me by Karen Katz, we read this every night before we go to bed and my son says all the words and actually wants to read this book every night. I make little comments............. like you went potty didn't you, your such a big boy, and you have big boy pants just like the little boy in the book, don't you? he says Ya and smiles and is very excited about pottying.

In the book the little boy gets a potty as a present so I followed the book and for his second birthday I bought a potty that makes a song when he pottys. He opened it and was interested right away. I said here is a potty just like the little boy got in your book. Now he associates the toilet with the book and likes sitting on it with a book or a puzzle.

Training pants also help they stay up just like big boy underwear and protect just like diapers, having Lightning McQueen and Mater from the Disney Pixar movie Cars also helps as well. He loves wearing cars underwear and has started telling me poop or pee when he has to go.

I have just added marshmallows into the mix to make this more consistent, I only give him marshmallows when he goes not when he wants to sit on the potty which was about every five minutes for the first day when he realized he got marshmallows for going potty.

He also gets stickers if he behaves good and likes putting stickers on a reward sheet that we have on the refrigerator. He gets a big sticker if he potty's.

Here are a couple tricks I have learned is right when they wake up and there training pants are not wet then they will have to go so say were gonna go potty and sit them on the potty. When I did this he went and was really surprised when his potty started playing a song, then he said I made water which was so cute. So when they wake up from a nap or first thing in the morning take them to the potty. Also right after breakfast, lunch, and dinner take them to the bathroom they will just have drank a lot so this is a good time. Soon they will start telling you they have to go.

You also have to be consistent because if your not then they are not going to be. It is not so much fun at first but with a positive attitude your child will catch on and like it. Good Luck with potty training.
